Jeff Mitchell Seminar Report

Today I attended the Jeff Mitchell Jiu-Jitsu Seminar in Rocklin, CA at the Robson Moura affiliate school, Monstrinho. Jeff is Robson Moura's first American Black Belt, and has released an enlightening DVD titled Proven Guard Techniques. The word around the block is that this is one of the fastest selling GUARD DVD's in the business. If you are looking to get ahead in your game, I highly recommend the series.
The Seminar was broken up into two sessions on Saturday and one session on Sunday. Unfortunately, I was only able to participate in one of the three sessions, but had an absolutely amazing time! The two hour afternoon session ended up going about a hour longer than planned and Jeff did a great job accommodating a variety of different skill levels. In addition to guard sweeps and attacks, we explored how to attack the turtle position, sneaky escapes out of side mount, and many other positions in the Q&A session. Jeff was kind enough to answer everyone's questions and even extended the session for an hour!
Awesome bjj tricks with Jeff Mitchell Seminar in Rocklin, CA!     My personal take on seminars is that they are a great opportunity to learn something new, AND (even better) a great time to make new friends! I'm glad I was able to attend the session and make a new set of Jiu-Jitsu friends in the Rocklin area. Thank you Jeff for welcoming me and leading an exciting seminar!
Also, a big congratulations to the Rocklin affiliate teacher Shane for earning his brown belt! Glad you made it through the gauntlet alive!

MATS? OVER RATED!!

Who said Jiu-Jitsu needs to be practiced inside? As a matter of fact, who ever said Jiu-Jitsu needs to be done on mats? The sunny weather in El Dorado Hills has been so great these last couple of weeks, we decided to move our DOJO out on to the grassy sidewalk!
No, we didn't do the entire workout outside. We were only out there for the warm ups, but it was a great way to get some sun and fresh air! We will be doing plenty more of these OUTSIDE DOJO workouts this summer in our AM and PM classes!
In addition to training outside, we would like to hold our SUBMISSION GRAPPLING tournament at the end of the summer in an outside venue as well!
SAMPLE OUTSIDE WARM UP:

5X50 sec. Pummel Match
2X60 sec. Arm Drag Drills
2X10 Jumping up to Guard
2X40 yard Bear Crawls
2X40 yard Wheel Barrel
5X50 yard sprints w/ 10 push ups

A Warrior's Poem

"Ame ni mo makezu" by Miyazawa Kenji is a magnificent poem about the human spirit! Please click the link: Ame ni mo makezu Poem  to read the translation. The poem is not just about overcoming adversity, but striving for each other! I think all who strive towards this type of ideal are TRUE WARRIORS!
What kind of warrior are you striving to become? We are always making choices about what we eat, how we train, but as TRUE WARRIORS we need to be aware of the people around us. What have we done to help someone else lately? How will we make a difference in someone's life?  I will ask you again, what kind of warrior are you striving to become?

This summer at EDHBJJ we will be starting a leadership program for all Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, and Judo students to take part in. If you are interested in contributing and helping us make a difference, we would love to have you come join us!

How to Become a Better Teacher of the Gentle Art

Have you heard of the movie The Horse Whisperer? Well, Buck Brannaman is the true living horse whisperer. He is amazing! In the documentary Buck, you see first hand the spirit of the gentle art both in practice and teaching.
The gentle art is a concept we hear all the time in Jiu-Jitsu, but this is a universal concept applicable to all grappling or wrestling based Martial Arts. Unfortunately, I've found that many jiujitsu and grappling academies talk about the gentle art, but struggle with implementing it into their curriculum, training, and lifestyle. The Gentle art is the concept of guiding an action, and not forcing an action. The concept of always trying to understand something with precision, and not just doing something to make it work. The concept of breaking things apart to build them back up stronger, and not just to impose your will on them. As student's and teacher's we can all learn from these concepts.
In my opinion, Buck's methods need to be taught, studies, and applied to all coaching situations. In wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and all of the grappling arts, there is exists the spirit of the gentle art, but very few have come to understand the methods and merits to this type of instruction. By mastering the gentle art as an instructor, I think we will find that we are not just responsible for helping other's become great jiujitsu players, but also responsible for helping other's learn more about themselves.
Buck is a true pioneer in the application and of the gentle art. I highly recommend all teacher's, coaches, and those involved in positions of leadership to watch and learn from this documentary, BUCK.

Leo Vieira Seminar Report

I had the opportunity to participate in the Leo Vieira Seminar at BEDA BJJ in Folsom yesterday, and it was top of the line competition material stuff! This Jiujitsu seminar was not only extremely organized in it's presentation of concepts and technique, but also well-rounded in addressing specific aspects of the competition game. In addition to the host academy, Beda Bjj, there were several other academies in attendance.
From El Dorado Hills Brazilian Jiujitsu Kyle, Garrett, Jerel, Angelo and myself were able to attend. "Leo has been my jiujitsu idol since I was a blue belt." Said Jerel, who was the first in our academy to find out about the local seminar. I personally love going to seminars! It's a great opportunity to make new friends, learn, and do some training. All in all, this was a great event! Thank you for putting it on!
Please keep us posted on future seminars both locally and in Northern California!

BJJ World Rankings

What do you think about ranking athletes? Although jiujitsu competitors should not be judged based on rankings alone, it is proof that jiujitsu is beginning to have an audience. After all, rankings are more for the spectators and the excitement factor of watching the top ranked competitor being beat by a "nobody."
According to this website we just found, one of our instructors, Eliot Kelly, is ranked 11th in the world amongst Brown belts. From the competitor's standpoint, rankings can provide a morale boost (and maybe even an ego boost!). But most importantly, they offer a new perspective on training and competition. Have I beat anyone ranked above me? CAN I beat anyone ranked above me? What are they doing in their training that I should be doing? Comparing yourself with people of similar ability (which is what ranking essentially does) should motivate a competitor to train to the best of their abilities and push themselves to a higher level.

Jiujitsu Clinic with Ethos Soccer Team

On June 12th and 14th, members of the Ethos Soccer team gathered at El Dorado Hills Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to train on the mat. Unlike the usual day of training on the field, the soccer players were barefoot, rolling around on the mat. Instructors Eliot Kelly, Kevin B, and Nico L, all volunteered their time to help educate these newcomers on learning some basic rules, concepts, positions, and terminology.
The enrichment class focused on helping the students understand what Brazilian Jiujitsu is, and the contrasts of the Martial Art as a Sport and Self-Defense. "I had a great time!" said Eliot,  "I really enjoy teaching brand new students about Jiu-Jitsu and getting the students to think about and become aware of Self-Defense situations. It's fun to compare the 'Rules of Self-Defense' with the 'Rules of the Sport' because you start to see people making connections with their learning and it really gets them thinking."
Not only did the Soccer players learn about Self-Defense, but also were exposed to the Sport side of the Martial Art. By the end, the players were rolling around on the mat with each other, asking all types of questions about the rules, how to score points and what they should or should not be doing in certain positions. This was a great experience to learn, train, and build a stronger bond as a team.

Jiu-Jitsu Class for Women

This week EDHBJJ started the FIRST Women's ONLY Jiu-Jitsu Class!
Instructor's Todd Jones & Eliot Kelly will be leading the class to introduce the value of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the female's in our community. We had Eliot & Todd answer a few questions about the class....

1) What are the benefits of a Women's ONLY Class?
Todd: The benifits of a women's only class is that it provides women with an opportunity to learn BJJ in an environment that does not require physical contact with the opposite sex. Learning the art of BJJ at times requires "up close and personal contact" with one's opponent, which can be intimidating for some. Removing that barrier opens the art of BJJ for these individuals, empowering them to apply it in any situation.
Eliot: First of all, I wanted all of our female students to feel safe. Speaking from an educational perspective, not much "learning" takes place when you feel threatened or are distracted by potential harm. Secondly, by having a class just for women, I feel women will be more comfortable to ask questions, share information, and go hard when rolling.
2) Why should women learn Jiu-Jitsu?
Todd: Women should learn BJJ for the same reasons men should learn BJJ: not only is it a fantastic form of exercise, but it can be a life-changing experience to know one possesses the skills to overcome an opponenent that is bigger and stronger and intent on doing harm.
Eliot: Well, in my opinion, Jiu-Jitsu is an awesome total body work out, where flexibility, balance, strength, endurance, and technical ability are tested. It's hard to find any other workout that can challenge all that at once. Women need to learn Jiu-Jitsu because it's as close to a real life Self-Defense situation as it gets. Jiu-Jitsu teaches us how to escape some of the most compromising and precarious positions, and therefore could result in the difference between life and death. Also, one of the core philosophies behind Jiu-Jitsu is for advanced technique to out smart power. I think that fits right into why Women should learn Jiu-Jitsu.
3) What is the idea behind the class?
Todd: The idea behind this class is to provide women with the opportunity to come together and learn one of the most effective and fastest growing martial art in the world today, get in fantastic shape, and have a blast doing it.                          Eliot: After observing several self-defense workshops and doing some self guided research, I noticed there is a very serious problem with teaching the idea of Self-Defense. I found that many Martial Arts Instructors were so intent on teaching how their "ART" was the best, that it was more of a sales opportunity than a Self-Defense lesson. After working with KJN Gary Merlo and KJN Johnathan Calazar of West Coast Martial Arts EDH, I finally found an alternative teaching method, and that Self-Defense needs to be treated much more seriously than a simple sales opportunity. The idea of our class is to educate our Women on both the SPORT of Jiu-Jitsu and SELF-DEFENSE of Jiu-Jitsu. Since the IBJJF SPORT rules are derived from the "spirit of self-defense," we will explore what ideas cross over into self-defense and what does not. The idea is to focus on solid basic technique from specific positions, raise awareness for the sport, and understand how to avoid potentially dangerous situations. Finally, I think Jiu-Jitsu is something we understand by doing. Even if they never compete in the sport, parents, Mother's, Wives, Sisters, and daughters can be better supporters if they have had some prior training on the mat!!! The idea behind the class is... GET ON THE MAT!!

JiuJitsu Submission Only Tournament in El Dorado Hills

June 10, 2012 was EDHBJJ's second tournament of the year, and first ever Brazilian Jiujitsu Submission Only Tournament! Time limits on the matches were extended, with 10 minutes for the kids division and 20 minutes for the adults division, while enforcing IBJJF rules for the allowed submissions.
The tournament started with exciting matches by the kids separated into 3 different weight divisions. Some matches went the full 10 minutes as the competitors rallied back and forth, fighting for their submission. Eliot mentioned on Sunday, "this was a big challenge. To face a potential 10 minute match is more than intimidating. The kids took on a challenge and made some big improvements from this event." Special prizes were awarded to Michael and Angelo for the "Fight of the Day," and J.T. was nominated for the "Spirit of Jiu-Jitsu" award. Sky and Payton were two other competitors in the kids division that really exhibited a "Spirit of Jiujitsu," as they battled against teammates who were older in age and higher in rank. Nevertheless, they didn't complain at all and made their best effort to compete with all their potential.
In the adult division, we had multiple belts from white all the way to brown in competition. Potentially facing a 20 minute match, the competitors went into competition fully aware that they may be in it for the long haul. Several matches did go the distance, as the competitors had to "grind it out" to the finish. Many of them came away from the tournament realizing the difficulty of getting the finish while keeping their cool in case the match lasted the full 20. "Fight of the Day" went to Kunk "KONG" and Brian "Bach2smooth," for their amazing grind match! "Jiu-Jitsu Spirit" award was split between two great fighters Steve and Jerel. Congratulations to all the competitors!!
The tournament also included several exciting additional moments. We had two visiting black belts put on a display of Brazilian Jiujitsu, Marcos Torregrosa from Yemaso BJJ and Gordon Schroder from Kovar's Academy. They made history as the first pair of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black belts rolling in El Dorado Hills, CA.
In another exciting moment, we witnessed our first Jiu-Jitsu Proposal! Although Angel was side lined due to an injury, he stepped on the mat to propose to his sweetheart, Rachel. Many of us were in tears of happiness as he dropped down to his knee and pulled a ring out, asking her to marry him. Way to go Angel!

IBJJF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS EDHBJJ RESULTS

The 2012 IBJJF World Championships were held in Long Beach, CA from May 31~ June 3. This was the most prestigious and exciting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament of the year! From El Dorado Hills Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Jordan and Eliot entered the tournament after months of disciplined training and weeks of intensive preparations.
Jordan went into competition on Thursday, and battled his way to the Semi-finals, and finished with a BRONZE medal in the Ultra-Heavy white belt division. In his bouts to the medal podium, he overcame some tough competition and pulled through some close matches and made an amazing display of dominance in others. We are very excited for his accomplishment at the World's most prestigious Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament, and are looking forward to seeing more of him on the mat!
Eliot went into competition on Saturday, and battled his way to the Semi-finals, finishing with a BRONZE medal in the Super-Heavy brown belt division. Shutting out his opponents until he reached the semi-finals, Eliot overcame much adversity in anticipation of the event. Please make sure to congratulate both competitors the next time you see them!
Bronze at the 2012 worlds Brown belt division! #2012worlds
In addition to congratulating Jordan and Eliot we would also like to congratulate all of the Sacramento Jiu-Jitsu competitors who participated in this event. Being the biggest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu event of 2012, it was great to have representation from Jiu-Jitsu schools in El Dorado Hills, Folsom, Rocklin, and Sacramento!
Proving that this is the premiere event of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the top ranked competitors upset each other in an amazing display of athleticism and martial art spirit! We hope to bring more competitors to the following World Championships next year!

"Congratulations Jordan & Eliot!"
