柔術 JIU-JITSU TRAINING 柔術

Jiu-Jitsu is great for the body and is an exciting adventure of the mind, spirit, and heart. In addition to sharing our experiences, I want to explore the multiple dimensions of Jiu-Jitsu as well as the philosophy, art, science, technique, etc. Most importantly, I want to use words to help define the Jiu-Jitsu we create with our bodies. When you read, the world widens and your mind begins to change a little. As we train hard to change ourselves for the better, we can also change our community!

El Dorado Hills Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiujitsu

El Dorado Hills Grappling is one of the premiere Martial Arts centers in El Dorado County. At EDH Grappling Jiujitsu, Judo, and Wrestling are offered to all ages. These three grappling bases are what we see dominating the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fights on a regular basis.
Instructors at EDH Grappling are all professionals in their respected fields, having earned their black belts or graduated from a Collegiate University while having lettered in their respected sport. Most importantly, the Martial Art is approached as a way to develop the individual both on and off the mat. This is a concept that closely resembles the philosophy of Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo.
Additionally, EDH Grappling offers an array of enrichment programs for those interested in diversifying their knowledge in related areas of Martial Arts. The theme of the enrichment programs are based on improving and better understanding self-defense. Self-Defense not only in the limited sense of protecting yourself from an assailant, but also in the sense of daily lifestyle habits such as nutrition, supplements, education, technical seminars, etc.

Winter Break Wrestling Camp in El Dorado Hills, CA

Wrestling Camp in El Dorado Hills, CA hosted by the WRESTLING DOJO of EDH Grappling.
The Wrestling Dojo of El Dorado Hills, CA will be hosting it's first Wrestling Camp of 2013 on January 2/3/4. This camp will be for wrestlers from the 5th grade all the way up to high school seniors. The camp will include some very unique features to provide individual specific one-to-one attention. Wrestlers will get an opportunity to train with new and fresh training partners without sacrificing any contact hours while getting some world class instruction on the mat.
Middle School Wrestlers will range from 5th grade to 8th grade. They will have three sessions of the span of 3 days starting at 9:00AM and go until 10:30. Following each session will be 30 minutes of open mat where wrestlers will get to wrestle, drill, and ask questions they were unable to ask during the session.
High School Wrestlers will range from 9th grade to 12th grade. They will have three sessions of the span of 3 days starting at 11:00AM and go until 12:30. Following each session will be 30 minutes of open mat where wrestlers will get to wrestle, drill, and ask questions they were unable to ask during the session.
The Wrestling Dojo is a unique training system designed for wrestlers of all ages. After 15 years of wrestling and coaching experience, the creator of the Wrestling Dojo, Eliot Kelly, realized that there were some great deficiencies in the sport. As a result of his training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, recently earning his Black Belt, he realized wrestling had become a "great sport" but lacked all the elements of "Martial Arts." "I got really into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu while I was still wrestling and training for a spot on the National Team. I quickly realized wrestling would be different if some tweaks were made in how it was taught. I really excited to push forward with this new concept and help spread the culture of wrestling!" We hope to see you on the mat at our first training camp of the year!

Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or just Jiu Jitsu? (Part 1)

I was talking with a Japanese person the other day, and they were asking me what was Brazilian about Jiu Jitsu? Interestingly, many people seem to wonder the same question. What is the difference between Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? What is the difference between Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
The second question seems easier to understand so let's start there:

What is the difference between Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

The answer is quite simple, in a round about sort of way.... Gracie Jiu Jitsu is Jiu Jitsu taught by the Gracie family. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the "Sport" or "Martial Art" of Jiu Jitsu, that is taught by someone. Let's say someone by the last name of Smith had their own Jiu Jitsu academy, then it might be called Smith Jiu Jitsu. More specifically, Gracie Jiu Jitsu or "_____" Jiu Jitsu is a system of Jiu Jitsu that has been created/learned and taught by that instructor. All of these instructors teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Interestingly, there are other types of Jiu Jitsu that are beginning to make a presence for themselves these days. Here are a a few worth mentioning; American Jiu Jitsu (A style of Jiu Jitsu influenced by folkstyle wrestling with strong takedowns, a great base, and aggressive attacks.) MMA Jiu Jitsu (A style of Jiu Jitsu influenced by the "sport" of Mixed Martial Arts. This style is very tactical in protecting the body from heavy blows and securing a hold while the bodies are slippery.) Self Defense Jiu Jitsu (A style of Jiu Jitsu focused purely on Self Defense. The focus is on neutralizing and escaping from dangerous positions or situations.)

What is Brazilian JiuJitsu all about? Building Self Defense and Confidence through movement training!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu isn't all about strength and fighting. It's about developing a healthy lifestyle and one of the ways people can participate in non-sparring jiu jitsu is though a ginastica training session, said El Dorado Hills Brazilian Jiujitsu instructor Todd Jones. "Ginastica is considered the basic movements jiujitsu," Todd said during a demonstration for us. "It's about flexibility and control." Although ginastica is beneficial for all ages, it is especially good for the middle ages and elderly because it keeps them moving and active. "It's a great workout for people who are 60 or 70 years old who want to stay active and improve their golf game or want to stay fit to hit the slopes in the winter. If they take time to participate and learn some movement skills, they can warm up a little before heading to the slopes and feel great when they get there.

from Master Claudio Franca in Santa Cruz, CA.

Todd explains the the workout would not be a strenuous fighting workout. "We learn how to twist and turn and move better." Participants will also learn to breathe correctly while working out. "When we breathe right, our joints work and move better, and our blood flow improves." Todd explained. The class will teach control, flexibility and dexterity, three things a lot of elderly people lose because of inactivity. "When you move, you never want to be a slave to momentum because that's when you get hurt." The most important benefit of ginastica is learning to fall in a way that limits injury. "All of the physical therapies that are done these days are focused on fall prevention," Todd said. "Falling is inevitable here in El Dorado Hills, regardless of what age you are. Ginastica teaches us how to fall without breaking bones, and more importantly how to get up after you fall."

Brazilian JiuJitsu in El Dorado Hills. Learn the Ultimate Martial Art!

Offering martial arts and self-defense training, El Dorado Hills JiuJitsu Academy is the first academy of its kind in the El Dorado County.
Located at 1132 Suncast Lane, the academy opened several years ago and has produced several world champions in just those few years.
Eliot Kelly, lead instructor at El Dorado Hills Jiu-Jitsu, said he has been training in martial arts, grappling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for more than 15 years.
“I graduated from Rocklin High School, attended UC Davis as an under graduate and worked in Japan for a few years after graduating,” he said. “When I moved back to the States, my wife and I fell in love with the beautiful area and people.”
As lead instructor, Eliot teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, an intense cardio workout that teaches the understanding of body control and defense.  According to Eliot, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is similar to the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) but without the striking.
“JiuJitsu is practical in everyday life,” Eliot added. “JiuJitsu is good for a lot of things, not just grappling.”
Eliot also offers self-defense training in his “Bully Proof” program for children ages 5-13.
Classes are also offered for adults 14 years and older.
Classes begin with calisthenics and stretching. Basic techniques are taught for about 30 minutes, followed by about 30 minutes of intermediate or advanced training.
Beginners to Jiu-Jitsu should expect at least three to five months of solid training before seeing significant returns in their technique and physical conditioning, and at least 12 months of training to get a solid grasp of the basics.

Monthly Training Goals in Jiu Jitsu: Baby Steps to Get There!

Setting goals is essential if you ever want to be successful in Jiu Jitsu. While it is true that you can improve by coming to class and just going with the flow, we have found that we really see improvements in ourselves and in our training partners when we set goals for our training. For most of us at El Dorado Hills Brazilian Jiu Jitsu our ultimate goal is to get our black belts. Getting a black belt is a very audacious goal that is going to take several years of commitment and dedication. Many people burn out before they ever reach their black belt. So how can you keep yourself motivated, focused, and avoid burn out? Set monthly training goals! Setting a monthly training goal gives you a reason to get on the mats when you are having that internal debate of going to class or sitting on the couch. Setting goals can also help you focus in on certain areas of your jiujitsu that you would like to improve.
So how do you set a training goal? Your goal at first should be something attainable in the short term. If you are just starting out it’s fairly safe to say that getting your blue belt in one month isn’t going to happen. Instead start with something like wanting to train at least 3 times a week. From there you can move to working on certain moves. For example this past month in Professor Eliot's class we worked on open guard attacks. Maybe your goal for this month is to use one of those guard attacks while you are rolling.
After you have set a goal make sure that you share it with someone. This can be your coach, your training partner, or even a non Jiu Jitsu friend. Telling people our goals is a way to keep ourselves accountable and by saying the goal out loud it becomes real. It no longer is just a thought in your head.
If you have a monthly training goal that you would like to share, please leave a comment below or stop by El Dorado Hills Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and talk with one of our instructors!

Weight Cutting for Wrestlers... Is there an alternate approach

When you think of wrestling, one of the things that comes to mind is a wrestler that needs to be "cutting" weight. Wrestling is a great sport, but there is definitely a negative stigma associated with wrestlers needing to lose weight and compete in a lighter weight class. Maintaining and well thought out nutrition program that fits the individual is an essential step in maintaining your desired weight. At the Wrestling Dojo, our system does not advocate for wrestlers to skip a meal or cut weight. We've created an alternative approach to the process. We have also changed the traditional experience of physical weight cutting. Instead of losing weight as a result of long lasting low intensity workouts, we recommend a short, high intensity workout. Here are some insights on the program:

A recommended reading for all wrestling coaches
First, it's important to answer this question, "What is the purpose of my workout?" If your work out is for losing weight, then you are taking steps to becoming a Champion at Weight Loss, but not necessarily a Champion at Wrestling. You could be a CHAMPION at WEIGH-INS, but I'm willing to bet that is not your goal. So why would you waste your time, energy, and effort for the purpose of weighing-in?

It's important to approach each workout as an opportunity to train and prepare for wrestling matches and not cutting weight. The real battle we are all training for is the wrestling, not stepping on the scale. If your workout becomes a weight cutting workout when it should be a training workout you are training for the wrong purposes. Therefore your workouts need to be designed to improve your cardiovascular endurance, including sprint work outs and quick-step jump roping. Doing these type of workouts with a heavy layers of sweats and "weight cutting clothes"will only slow you down and prevent you from getting optimal training. Although a low intensity workout is good once in a while, it's essential to maintain a high level intensity in your workouts and not allow your training sessions to become weight cutting sessions.

In order to have the ability to train at a high intensity, you need to have energy. Energy is a result of what we put inside our mouths. You need to take a very critical look at your nutrition program. No this is not a diet, it's a nutritional program for wrestlers, designed to fuel your body with the energy it needs to perform at an elite level. It is essential that we NEVER skip meals. Your car will not run on empty and the human body works in a similar way... As a matter of fact, a "crash diet" program where you begin to skip meals will put your body in a catabolic state. Once you've entered this phase you body will begin to eat into your muscles at a source of quick fuel and store fat as a way to hibernate energy. Losing muscle mass and gaining fatty tissue will not help your performance on the mat. Our next article will feature more on creating an effective nutritional program. In order to gain a deeper understanding of weight loss associated with wrestling, we recommend all  coaches and especially parents to look into reading, "The effects and risks of extreme weight loss on the body of a wrestler." by Joseph C. Gunter.

Come learn more about proper weight management for wrestlers with Coach Beau Weiner and Coach Eliot Kelly at the Wrestling Dojo in El Dorado Hills, CA. The wrestling program at EDH is designed to instill beginner wrestlers with life lasting habits, while providing experienced wrestlers with a set of tools specifically catered to the individual.

About Me

My photo
EDHBJJ
I am a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor living in Folsom and teaching in El Dorado Hills. I want to share my passion and experience as I continue to train, learn, teach, compete, and travel. I first started learning Jiu-Jitsu when I was working in Japan, while teaching English and coaching Wrestling at a high school and University. I found that it was a great way to learn something new while interacting with many of the non-Japanese population. Not only did I learn about Jiu-Jitsu and the elements associated with the Martial Art, but also how rich elements of South American culture have mixed with a traditional Japanese Martial Art. Not only is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu great for the body, but also an exciting adventure of the mind, spirit, and heart. I am currently seeking further sponsors to help with my training, travel, and effort to promote a healthier, stronger community.
