US Open Results: El Dorado Hills Brazilian JiuJitsu near Cameron Park

     Great job to the team and competitors from the US OPEN! In the kids division we had two competitors Sky and Nico compete on Saturday. They both did an amazing job preparing for one of the toughest kids tournaments in Northern California both finishing with a medal in hand. Great job to all of the yellow belts making a dedicated contribution to seeing these guys train in anticipation of the US Open! 

     For the adults, Aryn, one of our ladies, participated in her first tournament as a white belt. She was all smiles from her warm up all the way to the end of the day! She fell short of a medal this time, but we are very excited to see her potential as a competitor and a great martial artist! 

     In the blue belts, Kevin and Jordan took the mats on Saturday. Kevin showed great improvement this year beating a tough competitor had suffered a loss to earlier in the year by more than 15 points. He didn't make it to the medal podium but we are very excited to see his improvement as 2013 comes to a close. Keep being relentless Kevin! Jordan won by submission in his first match and fell to the sneaky baseball bat in his second. He is another competitor with great improvement, and finished with a Bronze! 

     Eliot took gold in his division beating a veteran black belt Samir Chantre who requested to bump up in weight to get a match. This won the division for Eliot, and placed him in the absolute tournament. He fell short by an advantage in his first match. Great job to all the competitors and team helping them get out there and  compete!!!!

BJJ World Rankings

     What do you think about ranking athletes? Although jiujitsu competitors should not be judged based on rankings alone, it is proof that jiujitsu is beginning to have an audience. After all, rankings are more for the spectators and the excitement factor of watching the top ranked competitor being beat by a "nobody."

     According to this website we just found, one of our instructors, Eliot Kelly, is ranked 11th in the world amongst Brown belts. From the competitor's standpoint, rankings can provide a morale boost (and maybe even an ego boost!). But most importantly, they offer a new perspective on training and competition. Have I beat anyone ranked above me? CAN I beat anyone ranked above me? What are they doing in their training that I should be doing? Comparing yourself with people of similar ability (which is what ranking essentially does) should motivate a competitor to train to the best of their abilities and push themselves to a higher level.

"Eliot's ranked 11th in the world today... What about next week?"

IBJJF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS EDHBJJ RESULTS

     The 2012 IBJJF World Championships were held in Long Beach, CA from May 31~ June 3. This was the most prestigious and exciting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament of the year! From El Dorado Hills Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Jordan and Eliot entered the tournament after months of disciplined training and weeks of intensive preparations.

     Jordan went into competition on Thursday, and battled his way to the Semi-finals, and finished with a BRONZE medal in the Ultra-Heavy white belt division. In his bouts to the medal podium, he overcame some tough competition and pulled through some close matches and made an amazing display of dominance in others. We are very excited for his accomplishment at the World's most prestigious Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament, and are looking forward to seeing more of him on the mat!
     Eliot went into competition on Saturday, and battled his way to the Semi-finals, finishing with a BRONZE medal in the Super-Heavy brown belt division. Shutting out his opponents until he reached the semi-finals, Eliot overcame much adversity in anticipation of the event. Please make sure to congratulate both competitors the next time you see them!

     In addition to congratulating Jordan and Eliot we would also like to congratulate all of the Sacramento Jiu-Jitsu competitors who participated in this event. Being the biggest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu event of 2012, it was great to have representation from Jiu-Jitsu schools in El Dorado Hills, Folsom, Rocklin, and Sacramento! 

     Proving that this is the premiere event of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the top ranked competitors upset each other in an amazing display of athleticism and martial art spirit! We hope to bring more competitors to the following World Championships next year!
