NoGi Jiu-Jitsu Tournament "Gentle Heart" Raises Awareness & Money in El Dorado Hills, CA

     El Dorado Hills Brazilian Jiujitsu hosted the Kids NoGi "Gentle Heart" Tournament Clinic this weekend in El Dorado Hills, CA. The tournament was an opportunity for students at EDH BJJ to compete in front of friends and family, learn from their wins and losses, and have fun on the mat. There were three divisions. Here are the results from the three divisions:

     Each competitor displayed a great series of technique as they battled it out one by one. There were some great scrambles, great takedowns, submissions from all angles, and most of all great sportsmanship. Each competitor knew the importance of helping each other compete to better themselves and so did the crowd. The mood in the dojo was positive, encouraging, with a slight degree of intensity and satisfaction for doing their best. Since this was an opportunity for the students to get as many matches as they could, every competitor win or lose, had at minimum three matches with some as many as five.
     In order to promote the spirit of learning, the tournament included an element of a clinic to the competition. After every single match, the competitors met with a coach to go over some of the strong points and weak points in their strategy and jiujitsu. Doing so reinforced the essence of competition, which is bringing out the best of what's within us. Interestingly, every student showed significant improvement from match to match, proving that the tournament-clinic concept was very helpful.

     The tournament also helped support one of the local events taking place in September. This tournament raised awareness and money for the heart walk talking place in Sacramento next month. A portion of the competitors registration went towards making a difference in improving public health and awareness. In addition to the medals, the students received heart shaped key chains as prizes for the competitions. The NoGi tournament will finish up the nogi jiujitsu training for the kids this summer as they students transition back into the gi for the fall. We are looking forward to seeing their improvements this winter at the Winter Gi Tournament-Clinic in El Dorado Hills. Another big congratulations to all the competitors and parents for supporting their growth and learning on and off the mat!

Ten Reasons to Sign Up for the NoGi Tournament this Weekend

     Our NoGi in house tournament clinic is coming up this weekend. If you have been thinking about signing up but haven't yet, here are a few reasons to get your name on the list. There is no particular order of importance to the list.

1. $5 of your registration will go towards the Heart walk in September.

2. Your Jiujitsu will be tested and win or lose, your jiujitsu will improve.

3. You will receive personal feedback from your match. 

4. The referee will be there to protect the safety of the competitors. 

5. The awards were handmade and look really really cool! 

6. If you've never participated in a tournament you should at least do one in your BJJ career. 

7. Win or lose, your motivation to train will become more clear. 

8. Unlike a regular class, you will experience excitement, adrenaline, and learn how to control it.

9. If your friends or family come, they will get to see what real jiujitsu looks like.

10. It helps your instructor see an evaluate your jiujitsu. 

     Even if you don't sign up for the tournament, we highly recommend coming in to watch and support your teammates. Believe it or not, just coming to watch will make an impact on your jiujitsu. Not to mention your teammates will feel supported and appreciate you being there to cheer you on.

Kids Jiu Jitsu Tournament in El Dorado Hills: EDH BJJ

     El Dorado Hills Brazilian Jiu Jitsu hosted the third annual spring Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kids Martial Arts Tournament on April 1st, 2013. This tournament was the first of four tournaments hosted at EDH BJJ. Our Kids Jiu-Jitsu tournament was a great success with each competitor getting at least two matches in a round-robin bracket style tournament. Excitement was in the air with parents and family members showing up in support with videos and cameras in hand to document the fun and exciting event. Congratulations to each and every competitors for the diligent and focused training in anticipation of the tournament.
     The tradition of our in-house tournament started several years ago to help the students better understand the rules of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Initially, the tournament was only with adult competitors but with our growing kids class and students interest in competition and strive to become their best, it was only a natural progression to include a kids & teens section. However, the focus from the tournament at the in-house tournament for the kids and adults are the same: Embrace the challenge of competition and learn from our victories and losses.
     Learning how to cope with the adrenaline of competition and take on a challenge is not something we all face in training on a daily basis. Interestingly, we have noticed that our in-house tournaments quickly changes the atmosphere in our dojo. Students who train with one another on a daily basis see each other through a different lens, and compete with one another to show their best selves on the mat. "I thought the tournament was great! The students have showed some big improvements from the last tournament. We also got some insight on what we need to work on as a team as well as what we need to improve on an individual basis." said Professor Eliot Kelly after the tournament on Monday.
     Several of the instructors were also commenting how when the students know and anticipate being in a tournament, a new sense of meaning is added to the students training. Students quickly realize that they are accountable for what they learn and are able to execute in practice and competition.
     For our first tournament of 2013 some fantastic prizes were prepared by one of the team mothers. These "medals" were hand crafted with love! All competitors were placed into brackets with each competitor receiving an award for their hard work and training in anticipation of the tournament and performance on the day of the tournament! A new tradition added to our tournament and seminars this 2013 will be along the theme of "making a difference." At our first seminar of the year we were able to raise close to $1,500 for the Mighty Oaks Wounded Warrior Training Foundation. Jiu-Jitsu Tournament Results: US OPEN

      This past weekend, on October 6 & 7, the US Open XVII Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament was held in San Jose, CA. El Dorado Hills Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters Eliot Kelly, Jordan Hernandez, Todd Jones, Kyle Parker, Kevin Brownell, Frank Richmond, Marshall Ayre, and Jerel Tengan competed under Team Yemaso Jiu Jitsu. 
         Day one of the tournament saw strong efforts from Marshall Ayre and Jordan Hernandez. Jordan took charge of his weight class and finished with a gold medal, while Marshall fought hard in his first competitive match! On day two Eliot took gold in his division and went on to take third in the absolute division, while both Todd and Jerel brought home silver medals in their weight class!
      It was a great day for our team! Not only did each individual show their best effort, but Team Yemaso Jiu Jitsu set a new precedent by being the first team to bring home a team title to the Sacramento area! Team Yemaso was on the podium twice with a second place finish in the juvenile team competition and a third place finish in the adult team competition.
More than any medal, the best part of the weekend was seeing our team compete together while being able to look into the stands and see so many supporters! Friends, family members, and teammates were all their to cheer for our competitions....and nothing beats that!

     A big thank you to everyone who made a contribution to getting these fighters prepared physically and mentally for this event! We are very excited about our performance as a team and can't wait to get out there for the next opportunity to represent Sacramento Jiu-Jitsu!

"Learn, Train, Share, Adapt,"

JiuJitsu Submission Only Tournament in El Dorado Hills

     June 10, 2012 was EDHBJJ's second tournament of the year, and first ever Brazilian Jiujitsu Submission Only Tournament! Time limits on the matches were extended, with 10 minutes for the kids division and 20 minutes for the adults division, while enforcing IBJJF rules for the allowed submissions.
     The tournament started with exciting matches by the kids separated into 3 different weight divisions. Some matches went the full 10 minutes as the competitors rallied back and forth, fighting for their submission. Eliot mentioned on Sunday, "this was a big challenge. To face a potential 10 minute match is more than intimidating. The kids took on a challenge and made some big improvements from this event." Special prizes were awarded to Michael and Angelo for the "Fight of the Day," and J.T. was nominated for the "Spirit of Jiu-Jitsu" award. Sky and Payton were two other competitors in the kids division that really exhibited a "Spirit of Jiujitsu," as they battled against teammates who were older in age and higher in rank. Nevertheless, they didn't complain at all and made their best effort to compete with all their potential.

      In the adult division, we had multiple belts from white all the way to brown in competition. Potentially facing a 20 minute match, the competitors went into competition fully aware that they may be in it for the long haul. Several matches did go the distance, as the competitors had to "grind it out" to the finish. Many of them came away from the tournament realizing the difficulty of getting the finish while keeping their cool in case the match lasted the full 20. "Fight of the Day" went to Kunk "KONG" and Brian "Bach2smooth," for their amazing grind match! "Jiu-Jitsu Spirit" award was split between two great fighters Steve and Jerel. Congratulations to all the competitors!!  

     The tournament also included several exciting additional moments. We had two visiting black belts put on a display of Brazilian Jiujitsu, Marcos Torregrosa from Yemaso BJJ and Gordon Schroder from Kovar's Academy. They made history as the first pair of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black belts rolling in El Dorado Hills, CA. 

      In another exciting moment, we witnessed our first Jiu-Jitsu Proposal! Although Angel was side lined due to an injury, he stepped on the mat to propose to his sweetheart, Rachel. Many of us were in tears of happiness as he dropped down to his knee and pulled a ring out, asking her to marry him. Way to go Angel!

"Congratulations Competitors!!"

1st Jiu-Jitsu Tournament in El Dorado Hills

        On December 22 we finished off 2010 with an in-house Gi Tournament. Competitors were divided into two different categories: above 185 and below 185. Each competitor had at least two matches and awards were given accordingly. Although the competition was against people we train with on a regular basis, the atmosphere was a little more intense than a usual practice. It was also a great opportunity for students to introduce family and friends to Cia Paulista Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and show off the skills they had developed from their rigorous training. As an instructor, I was very impressed to see each student's progress and how each individual has internalized Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and made it their own! Congratulations to all the competitors!

         At the end of the competition, several individuals were recognized and earned their belt promotion. Afterwards, we all met up for ice cream at ColdStone Creamery in the El Dorado Hills Town Center to share a little time together off the mat. Merry Christmas everyone!
