A Community Against Bullying Eldorado Hills, Folsom, Cameron Park

If the community can make a difference on bullying, allows us to contribute. El Dorado Hills Brazilian Jiu Jitsu offers kids marital arts classes with a focus on bullying during the first half of the semester. We not only talk about some of the verbal methods to deal with bullying, but also with the physical.

We want them to be able to defend themselves if necessary. To get out of bad situations. More importantly, we want them to know how to react and how to cope. How to prevent things from escalating. We want our students to know that there are people in the community that will help give them tools to stand up for themselves and other if necessary.

Please allow us to help make a difference! See you on the mat!

Local experts share advice in new anti-bullying guides

WINDBER — Local experts played a big part in developing new tools introduced across the state this week in the fight against bullying.

Highmark Foundation teamed with the Center for Safe Schools and Windber Research Institute to roll out four new guides geared specifically for parents and educators.

“As we got more involved in preventing bullying, we became aware of gaps in information for certain audiences,” foundation President Yvonne Cook said in a press release. “Parents of children who are bullied needed assistance but weren’t getting it. Furthermore, agencies that help families in crisis weren’t equipped with the necessary resources.“

The new guides are: “What Every Parent Should Know About Bullying,” “Bullying Prevention in Out-of-School and Afterschool Settings,” “What Every School Administrator Should Know About Bullying,” and “Bullying Prevention in Urban Schools.”

The main goal of the four guides is to present a unified approach to bullying prevention, said Karla Good, community outreach coordinator at the research institute.

“It is not just a school issue,” Good said. “It is truly a community issue.”

Parents are often the first line of defense against bullying, as well as the first to notice its effects, she said.

“We know when you have that consistent message at home, it is going to carry through to the school,” Good said, explaining the strategy in developing the parents guide.

“We put together the best practices in bullying prevention so we can tell them what we are doing in school,” she said. “They can reinforce that at home.”

Windber spearheaded the urban schools guide, based on its experience developing and introducing the Highmark Foundation-funded “HALT! Bullying Prevention Program” at schools throughout Highmark’s service area.

“We gathered professionals from across the state,” Good said. “Many times the urban setting is very different than the rural and small community school.”
